Choco-Orange Scones

Chocolate Chip Orange Scones
Modified from the Joy of Cooking

Preheat oven to 425. Mix (and then, if possible, chill, e.g., overnight):

  • 2 cups flour (spelt work fine; up to half whole wheat is fine too)
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 Tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Working quickly, cut in (with your fingers or a pastry cutter): 6 Tbsp unsalted butter

Add 1/2 cup chocolate chips (e.g., Sunspire organic dark chocolate chips)

Whisk together, then add:

  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup whip cream, half-and-half, or milk
  • zest of 1 orange

Mix, adding a little more cream or milk if necessary. Roll out onto a floured surface, cut into triangles, and transfer to ungreased cookie sheet. (Lazy alternative: roll out onto an ungreased cookie sheet, spread out with your fingers, and wait until after it cooks to cut the blob into pieces.) Brush tops with milk and sprinkle with cinnamon if desired. Bake 12-15 minutes until golden brown.

This recipe makes 6 to 8, so I usually double it.
